Be aware - dentists use UV lamps to allow cavity fillings harden. The UV lamp is not laser. I asked my dentist what it was when I accidentaly broke my teeth and was getting it fixed. I got glasses similar to laser glasses, but they were not laser glasses.

And "Provision" seems to be eye medical laser system, I guess they supply some glasses/goggles with it. Here the good thing is - parameters should be marked up. The problem might be if they do not fit with collecition Seth has.

If I remember correctly Dentists use
UV light to harden the glue they use. Even though they SEEM to cut down on the laser light I'm not convinced that they are cutting down enough of the correct wavelength.
It sounds like your mom is aware of the hazards of Laser light. Why don't you touch the subject with her and ask for a pair of these. Eagle Pair® 190-540nm OD6 Slip Over Laser Safety Goggles These cover both the blue and green spectrum. It would make us old guys sleep better at night knowing you young guys would be able to see clearly to run the country one day.

Seriously through, all kidding aside, if your going to stay in the laser hobby you NEED to get the correct safety glasses. Please consider, welcome and please watch your eyes you only got two. :thinking:

The adhesive dentists use is called composite and will harden with wavelengths from 450nm down to 400nm. It is often used as a filling instead of amalgam. I have never heard of a hygenist using it though. Hygenists do cleanings and sometimes administer locals, but don't actually do the work of dentists.

The gentleman in question is 14 years old. I'm guessing his mom works in a Dentist office, does all sorts of work, wherever she is needed. Gave her son some safety glasses that are suppose to be laser safety glasses, trying to help him out. She's doing the best she knows.

Seeing how he's showing an interest in lasers. Thought it was prudent to make sure his eyes would stay healthy.

Yeah, I got that some time ago. Actually cringed when he said he had a 450nm 1 watt handheld. My post was to add information where it might not have been correct. It wasn't meant as a slam or anything like that.

Ok guys, thank you all for worrying so much about my eyes. I asked my mom if I could get a new pair of glasses because the ones I'm using might not be good enough and she said she will buy me whatever pair I want. I didn't really want to ask because I feel bad about having her pay 50 dollars for me, but you have convinced me. Thank you

P.s Paul you were correct about hygienists. My mom works as a hygienist AND a dental assistant. Also no need to cringe at the thought of me having a 1 watt, I am responsible with my lasers

I'm sure you are a very responsible 14 year old. There are things that can happen you are not even aware of yet and a 1 watt laser is enough power to blind, burn, start fires and cause all sorts of harm in an instant. They are called accidents for a reason. People don't even have fully developed brains until they are in their 20s. With all due respect, you just don't know.

Welcome to the forum, but please do get proper eye protection as soon as you can. Is Seth short for anything? I gather it's a fairly common name in the States but it's one of those that is unheard of in the UK or Europe.

I used to have a 1.6W (1600mW) blue laser and I ended up getting rid of it for a few reasons.

-Firstly, it was too damn powerful to photograph. It made all my other lasers look like 5mW pointers and ruined the white balance. I often had to point it at a pure black object and all the others at something white and even then it was a washout.

-it ate batteries faster than a fat kid eats pies

-it was scary bright and I had a few close calls with it. Sometimes I'd get carried away while setting up for pictures and not realise I had my glasses on the top of my head, rather than over my eyes. Once or twice the laser rolled slightly or slipped and came rather close to gouging my eye out. And at that power, it would be goodbye binocular vision. There are several stories here of members who lost an eye in similar incidents. I can even remember one user's name - Tmack, or something like it.

-It burned holes in everything it touched. My curtains, my floor, my couch, my clothes, you name it. It was a total mare to actually use because outside it would cast a godly pillar of blue light right into heaven and inside it was like having a super powerful blue light torch. At a push, it would ignite old paper and receipts. Yes, by ignite I mean "on fire".

Although I learned to respect that laser hugely, it became such a mare to use as I daren't even put batteries in it without ARG OD7 goggles on so it got to a stage where I wasn't enjoying it. Except for the rare time I burnt holes in used floppy discs. So I sold it and I honestly don't miss it much. It's fun, but it's the same kind of fun that is having hundreds of HP in a street car... or an RPG for home defense? When the fun factor wears off you're left with not much practicality.

No, Seth isn't short for anything. My 1w blue is a little over spec (A little over 1100mw according to Max from lazerers LPM) and it pretty much sounds the same. Besides the fact that it doesn't burn holes in the stuff in my house because of its bad divergence
