First of all, on here safety is a big issue. So make sure you use proper laser safety glasses. It would be easier to buy your first laser. Or at least learn a lot about them before you make one.

And WELCOME TO THE FORUM! I learned so much here and hopefully you will too.

Welcome! Enjoy your stay. This is definitely a very rewarding and educational hobby:)

There are many DIY tutorials on here, and certainly most people end up messing around with a soldering iron sooner or later.

You might want to read up a little more on what you would like, and try out a few built lasers before you build your own.

Check out the Buy Sell Trade section of the forum, there are always some great lasers for sale.

For burning, while red may look interesting, purple 405nm and blue 445nm are much better since they easily reach much higher power levels.

As Haloid95 mentioned, safety is a big issue with powerful lasers. The same laser that's fun to play with and can burn through a CD case or light a match... well it can also leave instant an permanent damage to your eye... just from a split second reflection - and remember, EVERYTHING is reflective, it's only a question of how reflective.

So keep safe, and enjoy!
