My name is Brendan and I've had my eye on this forum on and off for a few years and have enjoyed lasers (and all tech) since the time I was young and had my first red laser pointer that I believe outlived my first dog, if only I still knew where it was:) Anyways, after wanting to get a proper laser for a few years, it recently financially fell into place and after reading much on this forum in regards to safety, wise first laser decisions, recommended vendors, etc... I finally bit the bullet and ordered a Jetlasers PL-E Mini 405nm 300mW and a PL-E Pro 532nm 300mW as well as the appropriate Laser goggles to accompany them and my little sisters who will surely be enjoying this hobby with me (in baby steps of course). I am eagerly awaiting their arrival, so in the meantime I don't yet have anything in terms of cool pictures or reviews and certainly no wisdom to share in regards to building lasers, YET. I cannot wait to learn to build my first laser which will also be a crash course in how to solder which I excitedly look forward to.

I just want to say thank you to everyone here on this forum. There are many of you who spend a lot of time answering peoples questions, and sharing your knowledge and insight, even when it's maybe not what the person wants to hear; you're helping people be safe and enjoy lasers and consequently keeping the integrity of this hobby intact as a result and I really admire that. Time helping others is no small investment and I think that speaks volumes about this community.

I look forward to learning and talking with many of you and developing a nice collection to share in the process. I'll stop rambling on for now.

Thank you kindly it's a pleasure to be here, QVC wasn't puttin' out like she used to:banghead:
They really are, I know where I'll be spending some money in months to come. I really wanted to add a Pl-E mini 445nm but I'd like to get familiar with owning and operating IIIB lasers safely before taking the plunge to >1Watt. All in good time. Gray and Carol were a pleasure to deal with as well and very helpful. I wish we had more Customer Service like that stateside.

Welcome to LPF Av8tor, have fun and be safe!

A great choice in choosing Jetlasers, IMO, they're the best out there, with super customer support, as you've already found out in dealing with Gray!
I'm sure you'll be just as happy with your PL-E's performance as you were with their service.

Starting out with a lower power is a very good idea, even though 300mW is not really low power. I wish more new members would consider doing this before jumping in to multi watt monsters right away.

Welcome to LPF as a member here.

It seems to me there is a lot of tacit "members" in the hobby not registered here. Hopefully we might increase the community here and bring LPF to be the main hub for the hobbyists. Hopefully even when regulation is considered, there might be the voice of community significant to make it smart and allow us performing the hobby without breaking law.

I'm looking forward to see your posts and projects here. ;)
Enjoy and stay safe...

Welcome, very nice introduction. Can't go wrong with JetLasers. If you can after you receive your units do a quick review and let us know your thoughts. Also nice to read what other people think. Enjoy and be safe. :)

450nm is nice. 462nm+ is where it's at in the blues. Don't forget about the single mode diodes. There are some 450's, 520's, and 635's available that have the best beam shapes out of the box. My favorite diode is the NDG4216 which the source has dried up :(

Thank you everyone for your kind and welcoming posts, this community is fantastic! I will absolutely post a brief review of them and include some pictures as well, though I won't be able to provide metrics from an LPM but it seems the consensus has already been made that J/L come in over-spec and of very high quality:) I also ordered some Glow in the dark stars/vinyl stickers because I think my little sisters will get a kick out of hitting those with the 405nm! ( I ordered them some kids safety goggles from Laser Safety Industries because i'm worried about doing that indoors even with the ebay 405 pointers i ordered to go along with them.) If anyone has any other fun recommendations to do with lasers like that or something similar but with other wavelengths, I'd love to hear them.

dden (any relationship with Denver?) What is it about the 462nm that you enjoy over a 445nm? I do have to say the way the 462nm beam looks coming out of a silver host especially a JL one looks fantastic!! That's on the shopping list, but I can't decide to get a 445/462 or the DPSS 473nm next. The 445nm do seem to be a dime a dozen and I don't understand why that is with so many other amazing wavelengths to enjoy. I like that the 473nm comes in a much lower power than the other two and consequently would be much more safe to operate especially indoors. As for the rest of your post, I'm going to have to head over to Sam's Laser FAQ to understand it in regards to the modes lol. Are the single mode diodes even better than the DPSS lasers in terms of beams or are you referring to best out of the box in regards to direct-diodes specifically? I'll have to look up that diode, I take it thats something I'll have to look up pictures of if I want to enjoy the beam from one anytime soon?

No laser diode is better in terms of beam specs, such as Gaussian beam profile or better divergence. This is because the diodes all have an emitter that even in single mode like the LPC-836, which has a pretty good divergence spec, gives a collimated square or rectangular profile when focused to infinity. To get a TEM00 profile you need a gas laser or a DPSS laser like the 473nm or the 532nm.

BTW, you might want to rethink the use of any laser by your very young sisters. No laser over 5 mW is safe to use by children. The problem with the 405nm laser is they are very close to UV and therefore aren't as visible as a 532nm of the same power. In fact, a 80 mW 405nm laser is hardly visible at all.

Welcome to the forum Av8tor! Looking forward to seeing some reviews and photos of your Jetlasers purchases and perhaps some beamshot photos. A lot of good information here. Have fun!!!
