I have been a lurker here for a while and finally decided to register. I bought my first laser in the mid 90's when I was in elementary school from a us Calvary magazine and was hooked ever since!! Now i am looking to get into the higher power lasers and this seem like a good place to start!

Thanks, Rick

Welcome to LPF, Rick!

It's always great to see a fellow Texan join up. There is a social group here (kinda inactive at the moment, but you should still join up) called Lone Star Laser Fans. You can go to the community drop-down at the top of the page and click the groups link to find it or just click here.

I'm fairly new to lasers myself. I seem to have always had one of those cheap-o red pointers laying around (you know, the dollar store kind) for playing with my pets and shining into different stuff to try and split the beam. It wasn't until this past year that I really caught the bug and started reading here and learning. Finding this forum was a catalyst to me becoming in-tune with this hobby an more of what was out there... and man, there is a lot. You'll be able to find out everything you need here from how to build lasers from scratch to the ins and outs of all sorts of laser flavors... single mode diode, dpss process, gas, dye, experimental, etc. There are some really sharp folks living here on LPF and wherever your heart leads you in this hobby, there is probably someone here than can be your guide.

Here are a few unsolicited suggestions that will help ya out...
  1. first off, finish filling out your profile info with stuff like age and location. This will help with things like members near you that can help with LPMing your lasers and/or shipping costs if you ever buy from another member... the age helps because most lasers made by the craftsmen here are not toys by a long shot and many won't sell to a minor due to legal liability, but that doesn't mean you are treated any differently around here on the forum. It just helps if you have a completed profile.
  2. Another big tip is to use the search tool at the bottom of the page. There have been over the years tens of thousands of members here and lots of the basic questions have been asked hundreds of times over... so searching first helps keep the forum archive more efficient instead of starting a new thread for something easily found. Don't hesitate to ask if you need help - there are TONS of nice folks with lots of experience that can help... just know that the search tool may help for the common questions just as quickly.
  3. Lastly, if you haven't already, consider dropping a few bucks on a nice set of safety goggles made for the laser wavelengths you own. It's an investment that you can't afford not to make imho... and as you learn more about when and where they are needed while using a laser, it's nice to have them already to put on rather than go laserless while you wait for them to arrive in the mail. You only get one set of eyes!

Be safe and have fun!

Cheers!!
