read it and pretty much every sticky in all the important sections BEFORE you ask for help -&&&&& use the search!!!!

BUT ABOVE ALL:

do *nothing* that will injure any living creature or anything REMOTELY illegal:yabbmad::tsk:

If you ask yourself 'is this illegal' then it prolly IS!!

Jan 2014 UPDATE

INFO REGARDING THE SUBSCRIPTION PROCESS
Kinda important about how the forum will work for you.
Scroll please down to post#24 and read it before you join our forum

OR if you are a member and are confused about subscriptions..

UPDATE 11/6/2019 forum
AFAIK this new forum does not have a way to sub a thread.
AND our locations no longer appear under our avatar EVERY time we post----SO unless you are in the 'witness protection deal', or not planning to be any more than 'hit and run ' member' or not planning to be active here or are a 'secret squirrel' DO put something about where you are in your PERSONAL PROFILE.... even if you made an 'intro' of yrself and put your location in THE OPs a most may not read it OR remember where you wrote about your location,,,,
Search both "LEM" and ''SELEM Laser'- at LPF and Google- LEMs are super-& always worth going the cost or effort to go.. trust us on this--
You may find out about the one you missed-just HOW do we find you to invite you????????

I SUGGEST YOU place your location in the TITLE of your intro==by doing that you will get greets from members in your area... any members owning LPMs will be happy to meter your collection any time any where and of course, for FREE!!
Our old forum had our location in every post we made--NOW this is gone....

CHOOSING YOUR NEW USERNAME.

Give this at least a few minutes thought. You CAN change it later buts thats a PITA and our mods/admin have plenty to do already IMO.
You cannot change it yourself and just going off and starting a new membership account is verbotten and reason for getting banned.

One acct. per user-

if another person in your household want s to join I suggest you contact admin and inform him- Filters are in place (AFAIK) that watch for dup IPs and you need to get that straight asap

.
While 'Laserdumbass' may seem cute and even fit you-- some day you will regret that choice.
Going with one that is nearly impossible to remember or pronounce may also be --not to your best advantage.

at the topish part of the any page click "Community" then 'member list'.
you will then see an alphabet where we keep the 10,000+ members' usernames.

If you have one or some names in mind do yourself a favor and look to see whats already taken that is close to yours( you cannot get a name it is taken btw) It does not matter if the 'owner' of that name has never even posted.
BUT if they are long gone and apparently not coming back using similiar name may not be so bad. WE had a HUGE influx of new members due to the unfortunate attention brought on by Wicked Laser- just the fact they so many came and did nothing here helps proves how bad WL was for most of us.

-- It appears than many feel the need to put the word laser in their username- n/p
UNLESS ...

you intend to make that the first part of your username

-- why--??

go to the 'L' section in member list and scroll through the 7 or 8 PAGES of Laserthis and laserthat.. its far from a unique choice and likely to be confused with all the laserothers. My money is on usernames starting with laser or Laser are the most common by a mile.

if you are hunting for a good name, the member list may be a good place to see what other have chosen. Using at least part of your real name may be good. Something offensive or vulgar will win you no friends here and you may be asked to change it or go away. PLEASE leave politics and religion at the door on your way in. WE do have a section for non laser offtopics so if you must wave your flag go do it there please.

it can be a good idea to use part of an email addy that you use for lasers and the forums. ( see my new thread at the bottom of the home page under 'suggestions'--)

Picking a name this is almost the same as a vet can be a slippery slope- the vet may not appreciate it- and you may be expected to live up the the rep of the vet. And it is far from original.

YOUR avatar--

this too should be something that a few of the above suggestions may apply when picking. It is however very easy to change - some never use a new one ('cough' daguin 'cough') .. while others change them monthly or even more often.

In an older thread here, some said they like to see the same avatars as it makes finding certain members posts quicker/easier when you scroll fast through threads. I have changed mine three or four times.

And again forget the religious, political and vulgar/obscene avatars.

Some of the GFIs are annoying- some people don't like them- they say that they distract from reading the posts-- I, personally, have only felt this way about a very few but others are bothered more. When one like that gets replaced we often see posts thanking them for (FINALLY)changing it.

If you find a really cool pic on the net expect to get Qs about who created it and you may find another member already using it. If you choose a avatar that's in use IIRC there is no 'rule' against doing that-- its an honest mistake(right?)and very quickly someone will let you know its in use.

A pic of your cat is way TOO gay!!

JUST KIDDIN"

we have some wonderful cat pic avatars -( some sadly have used up all nine of their lives)-

and other pets too & you will get PMs about them from other pet owners.. a common bonding thing.

YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE

You don't HAVE to fill it in- but if you want good answers to ALL your questions its something that NEEDS to be there- like your location ..it will show under your username in all that you post. You will get greets from members living close. If you ask about getting laser shipped we need to know where its going etc.

If you ask about needing to buy a LPM or getting a laser metered and you are near Houston I would offer my services to you or give you the usernames of seven other vet members in or near Houston Texas. if there is nothing under your username I may not even bother to post, after all you did not bother to fill out your profile page.

= If we want to know where you live you cannot keep us from knowing that- its in your IP address! SO just give it up. ..mentioning your location in a post or thread is NOT the same-

YOUR other personal info. +

You are wrong if you think we are against the younger crowd- They are the future of this hobby and forum.. If you buy laser from many members you will need to prove your age( and show your eyeware too)-- so give it up-
its funny- the young say they are older the old claim to be younger.
I will be 66 on July 3rd- chocolate cake please-

YOUR current status -- your profession (if you have one) or what you are studying in school or college.. and your goals concerning laser all help us to get to know you better and quicker.

LAST-- honesty- OK.. false info often gets exposed. IF you cannot be honest with us than perhaps leaving these questions unanswered is better(But I dont think so) or perhaps you are not right for this forum. .

.Once you are seen to be a liar you have put yourself in a bad place. Trust and respect can be lost very quickly and is not easy to get back..this forum has be lied to and scammed by many- we never forget and almost never forgive-
when you are out you stay out.

If you think you are so smart that you can rejoin and it will never be know you may be wrong- You and I need this forum more than it needs us. And if you get help here-- show your gratitude by sending in an occasional donation.

Once you are here- its wise to avoid any drama or fights. you are not required to take a side- your opinion was not prolly asked for.

You will look foolish if you happen to pick the side that turns out to be wrong.
Arguing with a vet can also be a mistake -- most base their opinions on lots of experience. You may have no clue about things that have happened here long ago. LOOK at he dates on posts and threads BEFORE YOU POST-- let the dead stay dead-
AND search before you post questions PLEASE.

If one of your first posts or threads is a common question and you do not get helped-- its not because we have not seen it or do not have the answers-- we are shunning YOU. Your first post SHOULD have been a proper intro ( in the WELCOME SECTION) placed where all of the intros are. Its not the same to post in, say the 445 section, both you intro AND your blue lasers question.

read those 'intros' of others-- see all the greets they got and links etc- Even if you joined long ago and never made your intro post or filled in your personal profile- its not too late- you will gain respect for following through.. I know this because I did not come here with good manners myself-I was here quite a while before making my introduction. I am glad I FINALLY did that.

There are a few other threads with great guidance for newcomers- read them- check out the stickies- check out company reviews- read how to build BEFORE you get parts!!

thats about all I have to say on this..

hope it gets some new members off on the right foot.

Thanks for posting this, it will come in very useful to THE NOT-YET MEMBERS :)

This is great advice to all new members and if followed will bypass much drama which occurs from people just sauntering in here with no profile and asking for the soup spoon of info on buying lasers. Well....it may reduce it at least :p

+1 to you sir

thanks buddies--

I was worried that I may come off as trying to be a know-it-all and that is far from the truth- almost every bit of advice contained was something that I could have used myself.... I was far from being forum savvy and the friendly advice from many helped me get on track.

I understand in this day of quick and short messages using lots of texting shortcuts make , for some, reading a brick like this a chore-- please remember that there are still a few of us with 'real' computers- so while you may be reading and composing on your teeny weeny I phone-- thats your choice-- I dont mind waiting until your get on a real PC to rely to me... and (almost)NOTHING is important enough to warrant texting while driving..

FYI I predict we will have no worries about that soon-- your right to talk/text etc while driving is NOT valid- expect your cell to be taken by the police when you get pulled over- you will not get it back anytime soon if your are in a wreck. Its evidence to be used against you in a court of law.

They now have a device that allows them to just place your phone on top of it- no other connections- and it will dwnld ALL your texts- cellphone numbers- times when you called- your nudie pics of your GF and more-

devices are coming that block phone use in certain areas-

in Texas they are looking at expanding the ban in school zones to 24/7 -- they will have a way to detect your phone without the need to see you using it- sorry bluetoothers-- you brought this all on yourself with your selfish need to make and take calls and texts like you are the most important person around.

sorry for the off topic rant-- but things have really gotten out of hand- 16 year olds feel entitled to own a car and have a cell phone at their ear at all times. And the blame for that falls on the parents IMO.
Free unlimited calls and free LD may have been a bad idea-- the phone becomes more important than using turnsignals.

very sad situation.. people are getting killed and badly injured- our insurance rates will soar.. so please do not say you agree with me and then continue to answer calls while driving- they can wait 99% of the time.

When I call friends on their cell phones one of my first Qs is 'Are you in your car?' If the reply is yes- I say-- BYE- call me back when its SAFE.

What I would really like to see is an application written for smartphones where I can set it so that when I am in my car it alters my phone to immediately go to voicemail and alter the voicemail to "I am in the car driving, I will return your call when I have either pulled over to the side of the road or reached my destination. Please leave a short message, thanks!" or if I get a text while driving would text them back "AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Hey sorry can't txt right now, driving. Talk to you in a bit."

This application would be indispensable. A lot of times I will have people calling me over and over and over and I hate that I have no way to communicate to them that I AM IN THE CAR. Just because I am not answering my phone does NOT mean I am avoiding you. Do like the Voicemail says and leave a message prease.

So yea, I agree completely!
Isaac

PS-If anyone here is a coding God and knows how to do this and does, he will earn rep points immediately.

Just make things easy and goes with your first initial followed by your last name. Mohrenberg - Matthew Ohrenberg.

Though nobody really knows how to pronounce my name so I get called Moh.....

This is the best advice I've seen in a single thread yet!
Too bad it can't be made "required" reading before a new member signs on.
Glad to see it's already been stickied.

Good work Hak!

BTW - I hope the cat isn't too gay L.O.L.

You using Android?

There's a cool feature called "SMS decline". When somebody is calling you, instead of clicking/swiping to answer, swipe from the bottom of the screen upwards (opposite of dropping the notification pane),

It will shut off the ringtone, and offer a few pre-written SMS which when you click, automatically decline a call and send an SMS to caller. You can access and write new or edit existing preset SMSes in options.

Otherwise, I'd imagine most phones have an option to turn on automatic go-to-voicemail decline instead of ringing. I never needed that option, when driving I just take out my phone and decline a call, or if I may think it's an important one, just pull over somewhere close.

In lectures, my phone is always silent/vibro only, I don't want the game sound FX being heard across the classroom...

ON TOPIC:

The advice on usernames "Laserthis" and "laserthat", yeah, what he said. Agreed. Too many people simply use a variant of Laser + noun, rarely use avatars, and when they do use them, it's usually something from Page 1 from Google Image Search "laser", making it unbelivably difficult to keep track of who is actually who.

In doubt? Dvelve into latin, mythology, Sci-fi, games.

Nobody picks a username like "Manticore" or something so brutally cool (which is as of now reserved for my next host, by the way! No stealing! :D ), but we do have 8 pages of Laserthings.

I am very new to this field but am in need of a laser product. I find it interesting that you mention "you can build your own" but feel it is beyond my capability given the time i have available. Is there anyone on the forum that could help me ?
The requirement and its reasons are as follows.
Motion picture film sound tracks on the edge of the film were always a black and white squiggle illuminated by a halogen lamp. Some years ago, to improve the signal quality, it was changed to a cyan coloured track. this meant that hte halogen light was no longer sufficient to get a good quality sound. Some people designed there own laser and it worked fantasticly. those people are no longer around. there are 2 products on the market that are led/laser replacements but cost either £7000 or £17000. This cost is far too much for the industry now. i would like to make a reasonable cost replacement and have seen crude kits cost as little as £1000, but they are too crude to use. Can anyone help me with this project ?
