I am very new to this field but am in need of a laser product. I find it interesting that you mention "you can build your own" but feel it is beyond my capability given the time i have available. Is there anyone on the forum that could help me ?
The requirement and its reasons are as follows.
Motion picture film sound tracks on the edge of the film were always a black and white squiggle illuminated by a halogen lamp. Some years ago, to improve the signal quality, it was changed to a cyan coloured track. this meant that hte halogen light was no longer sufficient to get a good quality sound. Some people designed there own laser and it worked fantasticly. those people are no longer around. there are 2 products on the market that are led/laser replacements but cost either £7000 or £17000. This cost is far too much for the industry now. i would like to make a reasonable cost replacement and have seen crude kits cost as little as £1000, but they are too crude to use. Can anyone help me with this project ?

First-- WELCOME-- I see that this is your first post- I will guess that you are also new to forums.

three things

It would have been nicer if your first ever post was placed in the WELCOME section- so you can introduce yourself to this forum community- we like to hear little about you- what you do for a living or subjects you study- hobbies are good to hear about and first names are good to share- for you we will assume that your first name is in your user name- which is actually a good idea..less confusion happens when that choice is made.

So Graham-
you have asked a good question and one that I am sure has never been asked before- wish I had some help for you but with LPF being so huge (largest laser forum in the world) there could be a member with help.

Your post should have been actually a thread(rather than a post) as this thread is about something totally unrelated to your question- and thus it will not be seen by the members that can possibly help you.

That is an easy fix- just copy it and save- then delete the above post and start a new thread IMO in the 'General' section.

If I may also make another suggestion, aside from making an intro thread in the 'welcome' section ( see other threads for an idea of what to put there)
You should fill in more info at your personal profile page... it is very import that you add the city in which you live. Not just UK -- we can give better advice if we know the country but more importantly-- there could be a member living next door and without more info you may never meet.

Off the top of my head the help you want for this may not be found-
This is ,to me, something that I have never heard of...and it sounds like a laser that must be just right for that use.

Certainly it should not be too powerful or I would think the laser would melt or damage something.. Most of the diode blue lasers that we are all now using would be too much-- these come from Kasio laser projectors- there is, however another blue diode that can be less powerful--

what would help you, I think --

can you find out the wavelength(nm) and milliwatt(mW) that a working laser has-- There are many things you need to know and understand well before you can build a laser from parts--more often than not first time builders fail and destroy the diode the driver or both..

When you place you welcome intro thread you will get many greetings from some of our members- in their posts you will find lots of great advice- links to stuff you need to know including building your first laser--

Be sure to make only one thread about you questions- and also if your post is the last one--rather than add another post just click 'edit' at the bottom of that last post and add new posts to that one-
Failing to do it this way is called 'double posting' or much worse 'triple posting'--

Use the search 'button' at the top and try google/bing etc -- if you get no results try changing your search terms- to see how the pros build lasers go to the 'tutorials' section then use 'search this section' and find 'tuts' about what you plan to do.

If you can find a laser for sale that does what you want- the some data you need to build your own devise will be in the 'Specs'- look for numbers with nm and mW after them- those tell you the color and power.

be sure to come back and let us know how your project is working out.

wish I had more infor for you...good luck & I look forward to seeing your intro thread.. hak

This is the best advice I've seen in a single thread yet!
Too bad it can't be made "required" reading before a new member signs on.
Glad to see it's already been stickied.

Good work Hak!

BTW - I hope the cat isn't too gay L.O.L.

WOW my second sticky thread-- Thank for all the posts-
I had an uncle to once told my brother and i this..

We all make mistakes in life-- no exceptions.
and a wise person will deal with them and try not to repeat.

We need to 'own' them and learn.

He told us that we too were making mistakes but as he and my dad( his brother) made many of these we are not allowed to make those same mistakes- By default.. we should only be making NEW mistakes as the old ones were already 'owned' and we should be smart enough to NOT repeat.

" like father, like son/ the acorn never falls far from the tree/etc "
should only be in reference to good things and not the bad.

What I would really like to see is an application written for smartphones where I can set it so that when I am in my car it alters my phone to immediately go to voicemail and alter the voicemail to "I am in the car driving, I will return your call when I have either pulled over to the side of the road or reached my destination. Please leave a short message, thanks!" or if I get a text while driving would text them back "AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Hey sorry can't txt right now, driving. Talk to you in a bit."

This application would be indispensable. A lot of times I will have people calling me over and over and over and I hate that I have no way to communicate to them that I AM IN THE CAR. Just because I am not answering my phone does NOT mean I am avoiding you. Do like the Voicemail says and leave a message prease.

So yea, I agree completely!
Isaac

PS-If anyone here is a coding God and knows how to do this and does, he will earn rep points immediately.

Alright so I'm a phone nerd and laser novice and thought I should mention near field communication (NFC). Basically, the phone has a sensor that picks up NFC communicators. Whether it be a credit card terminal or NFC sticker the phone reads the info and executes the action programmed.

I saw this in action with the Samsung Galaxy S III. A friend of mine purchased NFC stickers and programmed them for different places he'd be. So, when he got in his car he would touch his phone to the sicker and it would execute what ever the task the sicker told it (I.e. go in to airplane mode or turn silent as not to distract him).

They have been making strides in the field and with applications. Problem is... You need a phone that is NFC capable. Most high end phones are starting to now have NFC but it could take time.

The cool part is that you can put the stickers anywhere and program them to do tons of different stuff for different reasons.

Here's more:

NFC Tags Explained

Now back on track... Thanks hak!

I was creeping the forum for weeks before I joined and if you don't realize the way things are working around here then you're bound to get redirected again and again...

I will add a shortened version of this post in my OP.

YOUR CHOICE- GET EMAILS (&maybe too many in your opinion) whenever something new is posted in a thread you started or one you have posted in OR risk missing something important on occasion...looks like you CANNOT have it both ways.

This is a post I added at some social groups I have started--

Once Again-- FACE-PALMED!!My face is once more RED -- I am sorry for bitching so many times about subscribing to social groups in order to get e-mail notes when something new is added to the group discussions.

I joined many days ago(~ 5 years worth of days) -And when I did I ether opted-in for email notification or did not opt-out. Isaac set me straight on this (TY bro) Turns out that if a member does not want to get emails every time something is posted in the open forum(in thier OPs or threads posted in) , they cannot get emails for stuff going up in the social groups. I so I DO understand that if you are an active member maybe getting many emails is a problem-- I post a lot and I DO get quite a few email notes but it has never been a problem bad enough to risk missing something new that I really want to read.

So AFAIk you cannot get emails for a group unless you are willing to get them for everything..its a trade-off-

I am not going to ask/insist thay you change this set-up....BUT i will also NOT be playing secretary and PMing anyone when i post in a group and want/need all to see it.

I do not find it too much of a hassle to click on the email box on the left of notes about new stuff each day and delete many with one more click.

Perhaps this may be a possible way to enjoy both ways.. open a new account at Gmail or hot mail dedicated soley to the forums- thus nearly ALL emails will be in regards to the forums and new stuff. I know that this too will still be a problem but not as much as having so many new messages at your main email addy..
As I see it you cannot have it both ways-- If you dont mind never hearing about events coming like lasershows by members (IE KGB's Neon Paint Parties) or LEMs then that is your choice.

But this does explain why so few are aware of new threads and posts in social groups that I see no response to..

I will be adding this info in several places as this post will only be seen by a few. MAYBE you could change this setting in your PCP and try it that way for a while-- you can ALWAYS go back and change it again.

Nice post,I'm also new here and I did a short intro of myself just because i thought it was a nice think to do because I found a lot of interesting stuff here and it help me a lot in the purchase of my first high powered laser.I was searching a lot,I think a couple of hours of reading and researching was verry helpfull and instructional :)
And also these people here that make buy or sell lasers may have problems with the law and that is not a little think to me so I decide to make a little donate and I will make another one next month as soon i recieve my blue beauty,i can promise that.
Greetings from sunny slovenian coast i pozdrav na hrvatsku ;)

Usually to prevent accounts giving reputation to each other, therefore earning unfair amounts of rep.

Other reason is people don't recognize you. In our minds, account = person.

In short, it's annoying and don't do that.

No prob,

Also I've seen your signature, and I wish to thank you for NOT using the god-awful too-large annoying green laser blasting smiley in it. :)
