Hello all! My name is Mitchell, I'm 16, and I'm currently a High School Junior. Like most here, I've enjoyed laser pointers for a few years, but I didn't really catch the laser-enthusiast virus until I saw a Kipkay video. Yes, I know that he is a horrible start to this hobby, but before I went all out on a flashlight and a 650nm diode, I figured I'd research lasers until I got a bit more familiar with them. In a matter of days, I ended up cruising through LPF, and once I took a second to find out about drivers, I immediately tossed the Kipkay idea out the window. Since then (about a month ago), I've been reading as many threads as I could, and though I obviously have a lot more to learn, I feel pretty confident about my knowledge of lasers, especially in the infrared region. Due to this, I've decided to try my hand at a portable 2W 808nm/405nm laser (two 1W 9mm 808nm diodes combined with a PHR-803T diode, though the PHR-803T is so that I know where it's pointing). I hope to have future endeavors in the art of DIY lasers, and I hope to become an active member of the LPF community. I hope I will enjoy my time here, and I hope you will enjoy having me.

Welcome to the forum! :D Seems like you've done you homework and got yourself familiar with the forum well. I must say what you have described above is one of the more interesting projects I have heard about in while and I am very interested to see how it turns out. What do you plan to use to combine all those beams? I have thought about doing something like this for a while now, but there is no way I have the build skills to get it right. Hope it works out so I can give it a try too. :D

You will have some difficulty dealing with the bar-line multimode emission from the 9mm IR diodes. These just don't emit a clean spot that can be collimated into a beam with a single lens. You may need FAC (a cylinder lens) as well as a plano-convex lens. You can get 2W of 808nm from one diode if you use a c-mount, but c-mounts require a custom machined housing. If you go c-mount, ebay vendor snoctony is a quality IR LD vendor. I have several of his 2W c-mounts. You will need to do plenty of optics experimentation to get all this to work. You want to use the PHR for aiming? With 2W of IR, you need high-quality laser goggles on at all times the laser is in use. Also, anyone with you who wishes to see the laser used will need high quality laser goggles. 2W can be instant blindness and huge lawsuits. This is not a device to show off at school or work. I have several 2W handhelds. Mine are set up as close range burners, the focal point is about 6 inches from the laser. This can be done with a single aixiz acrylic uncoated lens if you use the snoctony 2W c-mount. IR lasers can be visualized with a camcorder or digicam preview screen as these cameras usually pick up IR quite well. This can be helpful when figuring out optics and focusing. Above all, be extremely careful at these power levels and get the goggles.

Bill, as soon as I became interested in IR I took a look at your projects. Once I had done that, I realized I was going to have a very tough time focusing the 9mm diodes I wanted to use, but since I'm trying to keep the money I spend to a minimum (as this is my first build), I figured I would just use the cylinder lenses I found in a DVD burner sled to focus them to a line. Unfortunately, I don't have access to anything I can machine parts with, so I am using an aluminum box for the housing (thus, it's not exactly "portable," per se). I am currently waiting for goggles rated for 808nm, and once I receive them, I will be assembling everything.
