Hi everyone, Im from New Zealand and havnt had much experience with lasers at all, ive played with the odd one and teased the cats, thats about it. However, I am very much into making things, and making them do certain tasks. So ive had an idea. -->

What I need is a colourless laser, something that animals cant see, humans included, that can be safely shone at animals, people, etc. average range would be between 50 meters to 1km max. But it would have to be safe enough you cant burn your fingers with it.

The second half of the equation is a reciever for such a laser, that when hit with this beam activates a relay, after that its easy.

The third part of this idea is that the laser needs to be somewhat broad, at approx 100m it needs to cover the area approximately of two adult men, standing side by side, with a reasonable gap between them. Approx a 2meter radius would be sufficient.

The idea came to me today when I was in a friends car and his radar detector went nuts, screaming laser!, around the corner was a cop with a speed gun. This sort of thing would be perfect, but expensive in the long run. Something i can make myself, then have made on a larger scale is what im aiming for.

You need to say what you will be doing, as it is already sounds questionable.

Im designing a safety beacon for hunting situations. Nothing naughty or dangerous. Im trying to save lives, im just toying with the idea of a laser to do it. The police lasers meet a standard where they can be shone into someones eyes for four hours without affecting their eyesight, I would need this to be the same.

A simple VERIFIED <5mW 980nm laser with (de)focusing lens would suffice for the transmitter, but the receiver will be more complex. In order to prevent false triggering and saturation of the sensor optical filtering with a bandpass filter will be necessary. Additionally the electronics will need to differentiate between background irradiance and the Tx signal. Using a pulsed Tx works well for this when simple detection is all that is required.

In the end it won't be a cheap project. I know you said it's for hunting safety, what exactly is your intended application? I'm guessing if a gun with the Tx is pointed at someone wearing a Rx it will make a sound alerting them of danger. Would be a good product, but to manufacture and sell such a device MANY regulations have to be followed and getting approval is very difficult and expensive thanks to anti laser laws. Also the Rx would give a false sense of security as it will do nothing if all hunters don't have the Tx equipped on their weapon. Not a bad idea, in fact would be excellent if one had the resources to take it to market fully and get legislative support to make it required (like the safety orange vests).

Welcome Shey! Im guessing this is something to avoid hunters shooting each other and "mistaking" one an other for a deer? e.g the hunter points his rifle with your invention at a "deer" ready to shoot then the "deer" sends a response back to say "I.D Your target" im a f****n Human not a deer, am i half right? im not too flash on the whole receiving signal thing with lasers but it sounds like you would want to do some research in the INFRARED light spectrums and IR receivers, if my guess if right you might need to take into account that some animals may be able to see a wider wavelength of IR than us humans,

Thanks guys, your both right on. Long story short, if a rifle is pointed at a person wearing the receiver/transmitter, ideally it would send a signal back to the rifle, allowing me to block off the scope or shine a led back into it, making it impossible to aim at something with the device. The laser laws in NZ are tight but i figure if police can use theirs, then surely so can a device designed to save lives. Accidental shootings are a big thing, and any prevention is a good thing.

I wouldn't be so sure. It is surprising how much government and police equipment gets away with that openly purchasable equipment is barred from containing. Before you spend a single penny on the project check with a LAWYER (not a police officer) or JUDGE to see if it is legal, and what legal ramifications are involved.

A lot of technology is fine to DIY and use yourself but the moment you open it up for sale to others you cross the line.
