Hello Everyone!

I just discovered this forum a week ago. What I find here is really awesome in all respects. In design, invention, inspiration and professional quality. And most importantly, you seem to never get tired of Lasers.

Well, I'm here because I always had a great fascination with lasers. I think I was the first 9 yo kid in my country (a long long long time ago) who could explain in detail how a Ruby laser worked. Unfortunately my life has been mostly occupied by loads of other things, so I never got to build any awesome diode laser, just a HeNe one also a long time ago... It was rather disappointing, as it didn't cut, burn or even focus properly and I could barely see the spot far away. In addition it was extremely heavy (due to iron core transformer) and electrocuting myself occasionally on the caps... So yeah, nice to see that here have been some substantial progress since.

Now I have a very specific project in mind. But before I dive in to the details of that, I just want to say, that although I have a descent technical knowledge of many things, but when it comes to diode lasers I am totally new, apart of what I've learned here and there in the recent weeks.

The project will require several things and that's where I think the LPF community can really help me. Since I do not currently own any high power LD pointer, I'd need both guidance and recommendations as to what to get and where to get it. Unfortunately the price is an issue for me as I'm on a very low budget. I need the most quality power for the buck. (Don't we always?)

Looking forward to work with you guys!

Hello SIEVA, welcome to LPF, it's not very busy here on weekends. You should add a more specific location to your profile, a location that says nothing is something many of us will not find amusing and less people will respond to your posts, especially if you ever ask where to buy stuff, this is an international forum with active members in 45 countries.

You used the phrase "high power LD pointer" if you are in the U.S. they are not pointers at 5mW and up if battery powered, legally they are considered surveying, leveling, and alignment lasers. No big deal though, I'll explain further if you want.

If you want to build or buy a powerful class 4 laser and you want the most for your money then you will want a 445nm or 450nm blue. You said you're on a very low budget, what does that mean? I suggest you save up more money first. I have built several lasers and the cheapest one so far was $140usd just for the parts, the most expensive one was $277.60usd just for the parts. Remember you will want to spend up to another $100 on safety glasses, batteries, and a charger. This is an expensive hobby and once you have one laser you will want more.

Welcome, SIEVA. I have already read some of your other posts concerning data logging for LPMs and the new chip that allows transmission and reception on the same antenna at the same time. You seem to have a good grasp of Quantum Mechanics and EE. I'm sure you will be able to do much of what you want to do here on this forum. If you are looking to build a 445nm blue laser with a diode, may I suggest the M140 laser diode pulled from the projectors of the same name. You can get the diode and the driver from DTRs website at a fairly reasonable price and a host for this assembly needn't cost much either. They are capable of putting out 2.2 watts of optical power. Instead of a G-2 lens you can get a single element aspheric lens assembly that will work equally as well for under $10.00. Feel free to PM me with any questions you might have.
