Default Hello from Massachusetts USA

I'm a retired engineer (computer systems). My immediate goal in joining was to get a recommendation for a cat-toy laser, since I'm well aware of laser dangers and the fact that the PRC Chinese make their profit from manufacturing standards that are a bad joke and QA that's nonexistent.

Not currently a laser hobbyist in part because even if I live to be 200 (unlikely, I suspect) I'll still be working on my current project backlog in -unordered list- sociopolitical action, ecopolitical action, software, and lutherie.

Hello MMacD, I'm new here too from Massachusetts

Although I'm a new member, I have a lot of experience with lasers, I hope I can help

for a cat-toy laser, I would recommend buying something from dx.com (if you don't mind a 3 week-1 month wait) but it's the best deal you can get, they only sell them in 5mw ratings, the red ones go for something around $2 and are powered by AAA batteries, great deal in my opinion, I got one a couple of months ago and unfortunately it came with a dent in the side because the packaging was terrible, and the batteries wouldn't fit in past the dent, but it was easy to pull apart and put it into a mint tin and it worked great.

if you don't wanna try your luck with overseas shipping and cheap quality, you can buy high-quality red lases from radioshack, if it's quality you care about, you can buy the best lasers from laserglow.com, which is located in canada. $30 is the cheaest red laser but it doesn't get better than that qality.

but really, this is a cat toy, you can go but one from the hardware store hahaha

For a Cat Toy...you can buy a cheap RED Laser
at your local Dollar Store like these on eBay...

Great Laser PET TOY THE Kitty Light Show BY Keychain Many Colors | eBay

They are usually way under 5mW of output and
safe for your cat.
Rated 5mW Green Lasers and Violet Lasers on
the other hand are usually overspec and would
be too powerful to use as a safe cat toy.

That being said....

Jerry is right about sticking to the really known-to-be-low powered lasers for cat toys... I ordered a "<5mW pen" for a pet toy once that metered over 75mW on my LPM. Look for 1mW lasers with known rep or like previously mentioned... the cheepie dollar store flavors probably are safe.

Welcome to the forum. Snoop around, you might find some stuff you like.

Be safe and have fun!!

Oooh, a luthier! I wish I had the talent to work on guitars - I can barely play.

I spent a great many years in Cambridge, mostly loved it, so long as I stuck to the T instead of the car.

I've had a few laser pointers of dubious quality that certainly seemed a lot more powerful than the 5mW that they were advertised at. I'd have to say that I picked up a better quality one at Fry's Electronics - at least, the "host" felt better and the fact that it used regular, off-the-shelf AAA batteries was nice.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

The ones that you find in the checkout lanes will usually take button-cell batteries, which may or may not be more expensive and difficult to find. They're also generally very cheap - I've had a couple of them, and the metal threads for the battery covers were stripped within a few minutes of use - seriously, the end popped off.

Anyway, nice to meetcha!
