Been lurking here for quite a while....ok well a couple of weeks.

I have been wanting to build my own for a long time but life always seems to get in the way. That and i lack the machine tools and space to build my own. :yabbem:

I'm an Electrical Engineer and understand that aspect of lasers, i was going to build a Co2 at one time...but life kept getting in the way. What i don't know is what kind of material or materials, hosts lenses etc work with each other. So for the time being,I will probably end up buying a 445 or 532 diy setup in the 1.5 to 2.0 watt range. I would love to do it myself but i have no way until I find a house with a 3 car garage. I do engine building on the side and that takes up all my space for now.

Plus some of the workmanship here is AMAZING. I'm sure it's simple practice to most, but none the less there is some really nice work here. I can run a lathe and a mill but.....

Howdy Ghost! Welcome to the forum!

If you want to edit the title, look just below the text entry box when you're editing the post and there is a "Go Advanced" button. That'll get ya where you need to be.

Expect to be hearing from Hak if you haven't already (a long-time member from Brazoria that ALWAYS hits up Texans). He'll probably shoot you an invite to Lone Star Laser Fan(atic)s. (It's really Fans, but I added the parentheses :) ) LSLF is a group he added here, it's where we get notifications of upcoming laser events, among other things.

In my sig you'll see the link to our Member Map. Feel free to have a look...I'll put you on it if ya like!

Re: Hello from Houdton Texas

Thanks everyone, glad to be here.

I knew building lasers was big, I was going to a few years back but cant believe how much power is being packed into and outputting of these handhelds. Last time i was into it, 1000mw was insane. Now i see 3000mw+.

I might buy a few for now and do some more lurking and learning. Aside from the electrical/electronics, I wont be able to contribute too much for sometime obviously.

Just like one of my other hobbies Astronomy, it took a few years to get good enough to offer advise.

I will be heading out for Canada Sunday to start my tenure as a Controls engineer in northern Alberta again and at the moment the family is keeping me close before i leave.BUT it's a 2 week on and 2 week off deal. Been off for about 8 months and the family got used to me being around again.

Nice thing is, I get a 2 week vacation every 2 weeks!!!

perhaps you can lunch with Kaph and me up that way- we can show you some of our toys..
sending invite to LSLF if not done already.

I can give you a fair priced kit of parts and links to building.
