Default Hello from the Edge of the World

Hello, everyone

First, thanks for the endless pages of info available on this site that I have been sifting through the past few months. There are SO many bad websites with so much poor information I have come across prior to finding this forum. I finally decided to join a week or so ago.

I currently live in the bush (Alaska). For those of you familiar with AK, I live on the Seward Peninsula, the edge of the world. A place like this demands you have hobbies, and lasers seem ideal for the landscape. My other time-fillers include guitar, hiking and spending time off the grid, beach combing (when the Bering Sea isn't frozen), and my dogs.

My educational background is in Biology and Healthcare Administration. I currently work in the Native tribal healthcare system.

I'm a pretty open book so if I left out anything you'd like to know just ask.

Thanks again!

Thanks! Yes in all my browsing I definitely did see some members from Alaska. There is even someone named Alaskan if I remember correctly. I was seeing that username in hundreds of posts it seemed like.

Hi, Gabe! Already am! I am still in the beginning stages of my laser love affair so I am still just fascinated by a beam stretching across the frozen sea, or reaching across mountain ranges. One thing I can't wait to try, (which both my reading and common sense tells me will have absolutely no result) is to see what happens with different wavelengths and powers pointed into the auroras.

From a more practical standpoint, I spend a good deal of time "out of town" which equals no cell service and potentially no people for miles and miles. A laser seems like an excellent way to signal. I always carry fire starting tools, but I suppose it could be used for that too.

Lastly, lasers seem like a fun way to learn about working with electronics. In all honestly, I just like to learn.

Haha, I think that fascination isn't restricted to beginners, it's usually something that sticks with you, the admiration of a beam. Your profile picture looks pretty professional, if you're a photographer then you should definitely take some photos of your (soon to be) lasers into the aurora. Even though I'm far up north enough to have the aurora borealis in the night sky, I never get to see it from light pollution . Anyway, have fun and make use of that gift of open space you have, take lots of photos!

Hey! Welcome to LPF!

I ever wondered how is to live in a place like Alaska, full of snow and cold winds, because of this, all my wallpapers have some kind of snow in it, I just get amazed seeing all the forests and how peacefully it looks.

Hi there, alessnilsen! Alaska is a fantastic place to live. Well, I guess I can only speak to my area of the state since it is SOOO big and I haven't lived other places in the state. I live in a part of Alaska that is off the road system so the only ways to get here are by plane (all year round) or by dog sled or snowmachine in the winter. We are lucky that our little town actually has 3 roads that lead out 70 to 80 miles and then stop. These roads are only maintained during the summer (June through October).

We are in the tundra so there are no trees here. If you travel out to the hot springs they have trees there, or the native village about 70 miles away also has trees.

We definitely have snow, though. This year, it came down in October, and will probably melt in June. The Bering Sea is still frozen as well.

It is definitely a beautiful place, though. Seascapes, mountains, rolling tundra, rivers through the forest, northern lights, all kinds of wildlife and beauty. I hope to showcase some of the incredible views with my laser pictures.

Yes, tundra and taiga forest are my favorite, by the way you wrote, it looks wonderful! I hope you can show us better the place you live with your photos!
