Default Hello all, new here

Hello LPF. My name is Aaron, always been fascinated with lasers. I have been lurking the forums for the past few days drooling over the builds and the amount of information available. I have ordered my first few parts to do a build, just need a host. Have a few old flashlights i may use. The parts i have ordered are as follows:
-1 x Copper 3.8mm diode mount for AixiZ 12x30 case
-1 x 405nm 20mW Laser Module 12x30mm
-1 x AixiZ Blue Laser Glass Lens for 405-455nm
-1 x 1W 445nm blue laser diode driver / 405nm laser driver

I am pretty handy when it comes to electronics, took 2 years of electronics in high school and have built/ repaired many of devices. Please leave advice and let me know what you think. Also still need to get some batteries, any good suggestions for this setup are greatly appreciated. Also if anyone knows of a good pen style host with a button on the rear as opposed to the button being on the center of the shaft. Thanks for reading and look forward to my time here.
-Aaron

Welcome to the LPF forum !

Quote:

-1 x 405nm 20mW Laser Module 12x30mm
These parts are basically the same. You will need 5.6mm copper modules for the diode.
Unlees you go for the smaller Pl450 diode which is 3.8mm wide.

well darn lol, looks like that will go into the parts bin. would it be necessary to swap to copper for heat dissipation in a pen build? otherwise i will just use the original

It doesn't matter if you use a copper or a chromed brass module. A pen build will be always a low power build.

Aaron, if you decide to use a flashlight make sure your module fits snug or make it fit snug and also i would recommend lithium bats as they make your laser last a lot longer inbetween battery changes/charges

well they are some people here on the forum that sell very good high quality ones but for now you are probably fine with the brand ultra fire for batteries these can be found on ebay or amazon or a lot of websites DX has them pretty cheap but you will be waiting from them for a while probably as they are located in china. i believe that survival lasers has some and they are located in US. Also a tip if you want faster shipping on ebay you can refine your search to not show international sellers and that will help, i don't know if amazon can do that but they probably can.

If you dont mind waiting for batteries to come from china and want to save cash this is a good solution:
Cheap Aa Lithium Battery, Best Aaa Rechargeable Batteries - Free Shipping - DX

I am assuming you are intending a build using an M140 445nm laser diode? You may want to note that the driver you have is designed to drive a diode to 1W(assuming I am reading what you said correctly) will make the diode create descent heat and more heat than I suggest in a pen build. You may be better off doing a build in one of the wildly popular and easy to use C6 hosts. Survival Laser sells them ready to go with heatsinks here if you are interested:
Survival Laser C6 Host Assembly

The C6 host can hold a single 18650 or two 16340 lithium batteries. Depending on your driver you can choose which you would need.

Default Re: Hello all, new here

Again, thanks for the info. I broke down and went to radioshack last night and bought some AAA's and AA's with a charger. I have ordered from DX in the past so i am aware of the shipping times. I have a LD from a long time ago and a driver that was suggested to go with it, from kipkay's lighter video. I have done more reading and research and plan on putting it in a larger host, not necessarily a pen build but flashlight style.

also disassembled this Laser Light Show w/ Dots last night and have been playing with the green laser all day, burning electrical tape and melting things that are black . The light show was from a friend that works at that company, he said it was broken but it works perfectly fine. I will look into if he can get me more "broken" ones.

Also have these glasses, from a friend as well. from the manual it says its fine for green beams http://compare.ebay.com/like/4000735...Types&var=sbar

I seriously doubt those goggles are good for protection from green lasers as they obviously transmit green light. I sell the Eagle Pair brand of CE certified laser goggles, may I suggest these:

Eagle Pair® 190-540nm Standard Laser Safety Goggles (for green lasers that produce no significant IR)

Eagle Pair® 190-540nm & 800-2000nm Laser Safety Goggles (for green lasers that produce IR)

Default Re: Hello all, new here

I agree about the green lenses not being suitable for blocking blue or green. You don't block a wavelength using a lens of the same color. My blue blocking lenses are vivid orange which is the exact opposite of blue. I believe the color that is mentioned on the goggles is simply stating the color of the lenses and not wavelength that they block. I have a link to the ones I use in my signature if you wanted to check them out as well but keep in mind they are not the same grade as Gary's. They can however almost completely block my 2W 445nm on the wall at 3 feet away and reduce a direct hit to a decently bright glow glow(possibly damaging if you stared at the beam for a few seconds) and take about 10 seconds to burn through on a direct hit.

The non-IR blocking goggles Gary linked to are quite similar to the ones I have. While the IR blocking type are superior their light transmission is very low so if you are not going to be using unfiltered 532nm lasers they are not necessary IMO.
