Default Hello

Hello, I'm brand new to home/hobby lasers, and laser pointers. I do, however, have some experience with military lasers, in the Army, I was a fire support specialist, attached to a brigade HQ company (highly classified). The targeting laser we used in the field was a 5,000 watt, Co2, laser called a "glid". We mounted it on the M-981 Fire Support Vehicle, or "fist v". They have an unlimeted range, given line of sight, and we always used a filter that reduced the intensity by 75%, however, it would still light tree trunks on fire. Bet you guys would love to have one of those, wouldn't you? The other thing I have new technologial insight about the nature of, is that they were tunable. They have 4 decimal, rotary knobs for that total of possible "cannels". Since all laser seeking, guided munitions, use just one, so they won't be affected by any other lasers, operating in the same proximity. I loved that job, I got to burn shit, and blow stuff up.

Default Re: Hello

Now why any private citizen would buy one of these, is beyond me, but appearantly, you can buy a handheld miltary targeting laser on ebay.
Insight ATPIAL AN/PEQ 15 IR Laser PVS ANVIS - eBay (item 290448956929 end time Jul-26-10 17:50:00 PDT)
Don't be misled by the fact that it's not mentioned, as are the 2 "targeting" lasers, one visable red, and one ir: Targeting lasers are Co2 lasers, up somewhere in the 10 micrometer band (10,000nm), they are FAR infrared, the "thermal" spectrum like police helicopter "flir", and well beyond even the night vision spectrum. But these are still very high power, and tunable, and if you have a surplus of Hellfire missiles, or some copperhead fuse for your 155mm howitzer, this is what you need to aim them. But that was actually what I did, and I can assure you, there really isn't any call for anyone to accurately place artillery fire in the civilian job market, although I heard they use light artilery pieces at some of the ski lodges, as avalanch prevention. I'd be great for that, except its too damn cold up there, for me.
