Fellow laser lover from Singapore here!
Male undergrad currently taking a double degree in Physics/ Material sciences.

Have built a couple of lasers before, but nothing >50mW so far.
Hoping to change that statistic soon :)
I have a strange preference for red lasers, they just look cooler to me.

If I may, can I start off with an appeal for help?

See, I'm not doing too well in my double degree and by the end of this academic year, I'm going to have to make a choice between material sciences and physics (technically if I don't make a decision, it's materials by default)...
I enjoy applications but theory is equally important to me, and being in Physics would give me access to a wider set of knowledge, but Materials would equip me with a highly specialised set of knowledge and skills.

Can the graduates out there chip in their opinions on theoretical vs applied?
It would assist me in my decision making.
:thanks:

I suppose you should choose the option that
comes the easiest and more comfortable to you.
Only you know yourself and your aptitude.

Applied! Applied! Definitely go applied. I've seen so many of my friends either not get a job in what they studied or go back for a second bachelors degree. There's not as much money in theory unless you teach.

GL with your decision.

Thanks for the welcomes and advice.

The issue of potential earnings is a large consideration...

Pick Physics > Poor > Regret > Goes into teaching > Blinds students with laser.
Pick Materials > Sell-out > Regret > Spends large salary on lasers.

Hmm... :undecided:

We'll if you pick Materials you end up with more lasers :yh:

Pick Physics > Poor > Regret > Goes into teaching > Blinds students with laser.
Pick Materials > Sell-out > Regret > Spends large salary on lasers.

Which is easier to get over, selling out, or being poor?

Yeah, could even end up specialising in semiconductors, always wondered how P and N type doping is carried out.

Tough choice, one is immediate and the other hits later in life.

Well, all in all, I just want to end up in a job surrounded by exciting apparatus and equipment.

Choose sell-out. With your extra cash you can take classes and learn whatever it is you want to know whereas if you are poor, you put hardship on yourself trying to go back to school and you lose time.

Also, it is hard to build lasers without money. Just sayin'.

WELCOME TO LPF!!!!! :D
