Hey folks-

Just joined the site a few days ago and want to introduce myself. I'm a rookie laser enthusiast and just ordered my first laser much over 100mw with the guidance of this forum.

My previous lazer (RIP) was bought as a 5mw 532nm pen laser. After educating myself on the forum, I now realize it was much more powerful (highly visible beam, stings skin, etc...). Not knowing any better, I used it regularly without goggles and feel grateful my friends and I all still have healthy eyes!

I recently ordered a 300mw 532nm PL-E pro (and a good pair of safety glasses) from Gray at Jetlasers. If you have been around the forum for more than a few days you have probably heard this before but I will say it again. Gray at Jetlasers is an OUTSTANDING fellow. He's patient, punctual, and knowledgeable and provided superior customer service.

I have learned a great deal about safety, equipment, and all things laser from this forum and I'm stoked to be a part of the community. It's amazing how many people around the world are on this forum.

Adios, Sleestak

Welcome to the LPF, Sleestak! It sounds to me like you have been a toe-dipping laserist for a while and want to take the plunge :) If that's the case, then you found the right place. There is an incredible amount of info here in the forum archives just a search click away (the search tool is at the bottom of each page) -AND- there are a ton of very knowledgeable laser folks around here that can help your through pretty much any situation from building to operation, etc. If someone hasn't already recommended it, I would say that a laser safety goggle purchase is worth the money. You can get a fairly cheap pair that covers the 532nm wavelength for less than $15, but most really nice pairs start around $45 or $50 and go up from there... it's worth the investment since you only get one set of eyes. The main reason for these imho is for when you are using your laser around ANYTHING that can be reflective or if you are using it where you are seeing in close proximity to the "dot" and reflecting light could be an issue. If you are just using outside where you never look into the beam and it's pointed into the sky or far away non-reflective material, you should be ok... common sense prevails here. Obviously, as you go up in laser power down the road, this becomes even more of an issue.

Have fun, Sleestak, and be safe!
Cheers!!

Thanks for the tips y'all. I see you are a big Wicked Lasers fan laserbee. I think the most horrifying story in that thread is this one -
http://laserpointerforums.com/f53/has-anyone-here-ever-hurt-their-eyes-56225.html

Downright evil to be selling goggles like that with high powered lasers. Unfortunately the Wicked Laser site is at the top of the page when I Google
"high power handheld laser". Good looking site too.

And thanks for the concern KapHn8d - I did purchase a pair of Eagles covering 532nm with my laser.

I loved watching that game.

I was at the Virginia Tech vs. WCU game, but kept up-to-date on the score. A lot of my friends skipped our game to go watch our rival (UVa) get demolished by Oregon.

Excited to see what your OC-gone-HC comes up with against Stanford this year.

Welcome to Laser Pointer Forums

Be sure to read the Stickies.

Just remember that if you have a question FIRST type it in the search bar (at the bottom of the page) to see if your question has already been answered, and THEN if you still have not found the answer to the question then you can ask post it.

Remember whenever using a laser to be aware of your surroundings, where the laser beam is going, where it will terminate, are there people nearby etc.

It is also good to remember to keep track of battery orientation, + or - towards tailcap or laser head.

Thanks for introducing yourself.

Be safe and have fun.
