I found this forum through a Google search for an old DVD-ROM drive I have laying around, wondering if I can do anything with it. I've seen Instructibles and other DIY tutorials about making a laser pointer/burner out of old drives and flashlight bodies. While this sounds interesting, I do NOT have any electronics "assembly" or soldering experience.....
I have used lasers before, namely in high school physics class (20 years ago!). I used the school's 0.5mW HeNe laser (and other supplies) to try my hand at holography for the Science Fair. After many failed attempts, I was able to produce two decent holograms. It was a fun experience.
Currently, my interest in lasers stems from a more serious hobby and lifestyle that I have chosen: daily carry of a firearm for self-defense. No, I'm not in the military or law enforcement, but here in Delaware any citizen (who is not prohibited from possessing/owning firearms) can openly carry a firearm without a license (it's only when you conceal do you need the license). I'm also the Co-Founder and Moderator of Delaware Open Carry (DELOC), a website and forum dedicated to (you guessed it) open carry in Delaware, and related subjects (laws, gear, personal encounters, training, etc). And before anyone asks... yes, I have had to use my firearm in self defense before.
I just joined this awesome forum to (hopefully) gain some more knowledge on portable lasers and laser pointers, particularly of the green wavelengths, and how they can be adapted to (and used on) firearms. I'm not sure if the DIY laser pointers can be adapted to such applications, but I'm sure this forum is full of information that I'll find very interesting and useful.
So, hello from Delaware, and I look forward to reading your forum and contributing someday.
