I just got a 1.8a driver from survival laser and it works great. No dummy load necessary. I've bought many drivers and diodes. Since I always buy from reliable sellers that label the package when sent, I've never needed one and have no idea what components you would need.

I got this one.

I don't know how to build one as I've never found the need. IF YOU BUY A PRESET DRIVER, YOU DON'T NEED IT. It's a tool to check driver output. If you order a driver with a set current, why would you test it. Unless you don't trust the seller.

Yes it's 1.25a.

I have a m140 in some pen with 1.25a and it is 1540mw with a g2 lens. You may get anywhere from 1000mw to 1300mw as stated in the detail of the link. Just reaad the link. The 1.25a in the title means it's a preset current.

Just for grins, shouldn't matter, but it is a good idea to short the output leads before soldering it to your diode for switching drivers (often indicated by presence of the inductor, the coil like component). This is to drain the output filter capacitor, from what I understand, and is done with no battery or power source connected.

This capacitor has the potential to be at whatever the voltage of the previous load was, or even as high as battery voltage! Chances are that it probably has very little charge stored right now, but that would suck to blow a diode that way.

These look like classic bucking flashlight drivers. The current is apparently hard-set by the resistor next to the LED - output.

I think everything I've ever bough with leads has come twisted together. But right before soldering, I short them anyway.

Just tw8st the wires together to short them then untwist and how about your business :) it's as easy as it sounds. Just to short them before connection

thanks soo much but i have also read i would need to "Ground myself" before i touch the wires so i don't short it

I've seen styropyro wrap a stripped wire around his wrist wrap the other end around a screwdriver and stick it in the ground hole of a wall socket. Lol
I just make sure I touch something metal before I touch the diode. Wouldn't want to static shock it.

It seems like you search enough to learn the problem, but not the solution lol. Use the search bar at the bottom. I bet you'll find the answer to every question you asked.

Yup.
Personally I just short the wires and myself and don't worry about it. It's an extra precaution.
