Well, alright, not really.

Hello everyone, my preference is to be called by my internet title, Catis.

I'll put it to you guys bluntly: I know absolutely nothing about lasers, laser pointers, et cetera. This reason is exactly why i'm here. I would like to learn about how they work, how to manipulate them, their uses, and over-all how I can have fun with them, and when i'm more experienced, take on challenges.

With my recent increase in spare time, I am looking to take up a new hobby. This whole form of science, and art, if you will, of lasers has attracted me sinc eI was younger, but until I saw a video on YouTube with your site linked to it, I never really took any initiative to try and learn.

That's my story. That's why i'm here, and how I got here. I'm not really sure where to start, but i'm sure you guys could help me with that.

Welcome to the forum. You will see that there is a TON of people that are around that will help you learn and grow! I urge you to look at the Buy/Sell/Trade topic and take a look at Kenom's collection that he is selling.

the way i started was by seeing that notorious flashlight hack on instructables. i had a dvd burner that worked almost perfectly except a couple gears were missing some teeth so my tray was noisy going in and out and it wouldnt close properly and stay closed, so i decided to buy a new one and try this hack myself. if you wanted to start somewhere a dvd burner would be a good place. it is probably the cheapest laser you can get and since you have to make the module i cant really think of a better way to learn. if you dont have a burner to tear apart or you cant get a burner for 20-$30 you may want to check the group buy section. if senkat is all sold out there may be another buy starting in the near future. you may want to purchase a few cheap diodes to get started. id say at least 3. you should be able to get them for around $20 each shipped. the first will most likely fry. the second you can work out proper cooling and find its limit. by the third you should have it completely figured out.
