some stage hand moved a truss and lasers that were set up safely hit the lenses on 12 projectors and killed them all at >$10,000 EACH.

Many of us have digital cams w/ burnt out pixels. cell phone cameras too.

Damage to such gear has become a problem with laser show operators-
Most warn all about this possibility and attempt to have some form of waived liability.

You NEVER want to be aiming cameras directly at the laser source.
When doing laser 'tunnel' pics you must stay inside the cone-averting the camera all other times. For Liquid Sky be under the wave or above it. From the side is not as good but ixs safer. . imho

More idiots. This is a car forum in Michigan and the members are complete fools which you can see in the link I provided. I was banned because I didn't let them talk shit and checked them on it and looks like they need some advice again... They banned me after like 10 posts hahaha.

Any one know about those crazy pen lazers that can start fires?

So, whose going to get on there and try to help them? Personally, I think it'd be funny if they bought a laser and burned themselves with it, but you know they'll end up hurting other people too...

Maybe someone could just tell them they're illegal now and they all get taken away by customs...?

Hey Carl, It's probably a good thing that you were banned from that forum, every one of the posters in that thread is a complete a**hat.

Unfortunately, those are the type of idiots that most people associate with laserpointer use!

It's kind of embarrasing that they are a local group from the same area as we live. :yabbem:

thnks Tony

I surprized actually that we have not heard about more incidents like this one.

I hope those hearing about them are not ones who will 'copycat' -

whatever happens you can be sure it will be bad for us and do very little in the way of a 'solution'

IMHO the 'traget' group, the ones in the majority of offenders, requires most of the effort to 'reduce harm' and have any chances of doing much good.

that is why this thread in the 'welcome' section- while i dont think many have bad intentions -- far too often in situations like this its another person using a 'friends' gun- knife- laser- whatever with or without permission.

btw
just joined another forum- they require real name (seen only by admin) and real location. AND you can't post or make a thread until AFTER you make an 'intro' in the 'Checking in/Checking out' forum.. also a place to let the forum you are making some changes in your laser plans-- movin' on etc

and another one -- has a No Nickname policy... not sure how i feel 'bout that- funny
the forum name is a nickname -- iirc VenomMan..

best wishes stay safe

update-

turns out apparently he was telling the truth.

From NBC 4 New York, the New York Post and the New York Times

UPDATED March 14 2015: Frank Egan’s roommate and brother-in-law, Elehecer Balaguer, 54, claimed that he was the one using the laser pointer. According to the New York Times, Balaguer swore an oath in New York State Supreme Court on March 13 2015 that he, not Egan, was responsible: “Frank had nothing to do with it. I was the one that did it. It was just a kid thing. It was a stupid thing to do.” Balaguer first denied aiming at aircraft, then after being asked two more times, confessed “I pointed it at the plane, yes, thinking it was a …” and his voice trailed off. He then said “But I didn’t mean to hurt anybody.” According to Egan’s lawyer, Egan never told the police he used the laser, contrary to the police statement after Egan’s arrest. From the New York Times. A related article in the New York Times published March 12 2015 was entitled “Powerful Lasers Easy to Buy, Experts Say.” The New York Post called the laser “military-grade” and said it had been purchased while on vacation in Orlando.

UPDATED March 17 2015: Balaguer was charged on March 16 2015 in federal court with aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft. This has a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. FAA officials said they had to redirect traffic in and out of LaGuardia on March 9 to avoid going over the Bronx, where Balaguer and Egan lived. Balaguer’s attorney said the suspect “uses methadone every day and takes medication for bipolar disorder”, and that he was “harmless”: “It was stupidity, not venality.” From the Wall Street Journal.

so Sen. Chuck's comments were in response to the La Guardia incident-
one Air canada pilot and two nypd were taken for eye treatment/ evaluation.
AND its unlikely we will see what was the diagnose.

Hak,
Awsome vid very blunt and to the point great for young and old folks. Very informative and simple to understand. Yes there are many ways to screw up a soup sandwich. Many people don't understand the ramifications of misuse. Not to mention messing up something many of us enjoy doing. It's a shame there are so many illiterate minded folks out there. Well kudos to you once again Master Hak for bringing us this powerful orientation of what basically stupid people will do.

Under other circumstances I would take down 'Frankie boy's' pic - be seeing him makes me laugh and his hands are far from clean in this matter
he was very careless.

=so those being careless where your lasers are being stored etc- its your bad too!! if something bad happens

and so..kids et al will do what they do- so they must be put away properly- w/ batts stored elsewhere.

"We" had a possible VERY serious 'accident' happen a few years back involving a vet member and a newcomer and a laser shot to the eye- up close & high power.

I am not at all going into detail- it was very fortunate that it did not end much worse. But we need to learn from this..

and if it had gone badly-- trust me- the entire laser community would have seen some effects and much much worse for a few.

---- My suggestions- ANY member wishing to post about injuries should consult with the mods- this forum is read by many more than just members and also we have some members who are NOT laser enthauasists. Better to NOT post something 'iffy' than to find later it needs deletion which is likely too late.

---- And perhaps PMing your 'helpful member' about a post in praise & ask IF they really want you to do that.. OR leave your comments to something like -'-I was very happy with 'experience with member 'XXXX'.'
making over 5 mW and selling is not legal

I see the coming changes in the future to NOT be making our 'hobby' any easier DO YOU??

We are the ONLY ONES see things like we do. -- if you cant convince ALL your friends anf family that your interest in lasers is 100% worthy, HOW the hell do you thing John Q Public sees us. -- If we are not REALLY doing something about this and NOT JUST HERE,...-- we are doomed--

Email Sen. Chuck

'we' are all we have--

The laser show community has ILDA- which 'looks out' for Professional Laser Show operators and companies..Pointer problems have made problems for the lasershow community so how do you think they feel about them?? DUH!

we have nobody-

There have been lots of talk and some great suggestions- the talk is good but not much help will come of that if we all dont do MORE.

Every time you welcome a new members make going to LPS.com #1- and put a link to them in yr sig like Alaskan myself and others have done.

I can't thing of a single 'Stickie' more important..

we will no longer need to worry about eyeware after they take away our lasers..

some ideas --

Bumper Stickers- like ..'LASER POINTER=NOT a PRANK- Its JAIL & BIG FINE.

Make big copies if the FBI poster and put them where they can be seen.

A 'quiz' newcomers must take before being allowed to join- its at other forums so i know it can be done.

same with REAL photo ID proof of age ( we were asked to copy/photo with address and ID # blocked- just name, DOB, state, and pic is needed to show.
and a 'selfie' with date- some of this can be seen ONLY by admin and MODS.

I have heard back from some new members asking where to place an intro- it seems obvious to ME but.. apparently not to a few.

At the reptile forum a special section is called 'Cheaking In/Checking Out'

A New member starts there before they can post elsewhere- if the intro is not done well enough to suit a mod- they can do-over til they get it right.
If a member is leaving - they post there- If taking a break or away for some time- that the place for that info if you want it shared.

One told me that a social group that is 'invite only' and the restrictions like access to the VET sdection looked like a good way to be able to get with those we want aside form PMs, Email or in the open forum. and they are also spam free zones.

Some forums require new members to be sponsored by an existing member--or a referal.

Actual General Location-IPs verified.

This one sounds VERY GOOD- Apply for a grant to produce a PSA about 'the problem' or do your own version of the 'funny' vid but use w/ permission, the audio and place the lyrics so they can be read while viewing- close caption style-

I am looking to do one with small figures like action figures- PeeWee Herman dolls- toys from movies- Sq.pants Sponge bob-Felix the cat- hundreds of there toys are almost free at thrift shops and crude animation is easy to do -- photo shop other images- only limit is yr imagintion- send you first try in for the grant asking for funds to do a better one-- to date i have only ever seen ONE PSA on pointers-

Be sure to vist the WELCOME section often and reach out to new members-

please add your ideas and feeling about all this..
