Welcome to the forum, Railcar79. I don't have an aquarium, but I love reading the threads you reef guys put up about managing the bad critters in teh tank with lasers. It's very interested. You'll find a ton of great laser info here... make yourself at home.
I ahvent been able to find any information on it, is it possible to have a laser cut living tissue and calcium carbonate under water? We frag our corals, we pull them out of the water, and using diamond saw blades, bone pliers and scalples cut them apart (fragment) and glue them to rocks for resale or trade. If I could cut them under water with a laser, it would be cool as heck, and less traumatic, I would think
No, i am afraid that you would need a 40+ watt CO2 to do such things, wihich i would assume yould be incredibly traumatic to the corals. here is a good option for a blue: Si-Fi lasers 2 Watts
Basically, a sea cucumber. Though I've never seen one own by a hobbyist, and I've seen a lot..
@OP, how do you feel about Cherry Corals? I am always tossing around the idea to build a small nanocube, and their corals are gorgeous. Though I have a hunch it's all imaged under UV.
It is actually the Glaucus atlanticus, a nudibranch that only eats the dangerously venomous Portuguese Man o' War Physalia physalis; the by-the-wind-sailor Velella velella; the blue button Porpita porpita; and the violet snail, Janthina janthina. they are poisionous, but very beautiful. Nudis are very unique, they only eat specific foods, and without those specific foods they starve to death, they will not eat anything but their specialized prey.
I dont do much with online coral vendors, all my corals have come from local clubs. Cherry has some real fine corals, as does AquaSD, and Sexy Corals. All the corals you see on line are usually photos under heavy Actinic lights (actinic is 400-480 nm) cause that is the best PAR for the corals, and really makes it pop. a plain green coral will look dull under regular light (10000k+) but glow like radioactive waste under the right light.
Wow. I figured it had to be poisonous, being that color, and so striking.
The Wikipedia article on Glaucus atlanticus is awesome. This thing is badass.
i got quite a few expensive hobbies, and it looks like lasers may be the newest addition. If it keeps me from buying a peppermint angelfish, I am sure the wife wont mind too much.
well I have had some time away from the boards. tried some imports and lasers from flea bay, all i have is some expensive garbage, and a burnt mess. yes one cheapo actually smoked and the battery ruptured. so I am back here looking to the crew, anyone out there willing to take on a build? looking for a 3+ watt pointer, but dont want to go bankrupt in the process.
Been a while away from the boards. But I am back. I tried to build a laser for this purpose, and it smoked in my hand. Not good. So I will throw it out there. Who would be willing to build a unit for me and how much to do it?? I have 2 sets of Kentech KHE-5401 eyepro.
His 3X expander works well even up close, a 3w with his expander will do the job, but tell him what you want to do and Podo will get you just what you need.
