Hey everyone - Im from Australia, 17 yr old chick with a pilot licence and striving to be an astronaut however before i do that i need to ace my physics assignment which is.. Yep, you guessed it! Im making a laser or few and doing a report on them. Most probably you will see me on here as i will need a lot of help but later on i [might] be able to contribute to this site.My bf bobhaha suggested DPSS so links, info or anything to get me going would be awesome.
Thanks everyone

Since this is going to end up being a fairly "public" report, I highly recommend that you stay with lab type lasers. Hand held lasers over 1mW will get you in big trouble there.

Welcome.

Welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay here. Pilot & astronaut to be you say? Nice :san:
Did you choose lasers or was that just the assignment? I predict that many will certainly be willing to provide any help you will need.
Know what kind or color of DPSS laser you would like? 532nm green will be least expensive (& will also give 1064nm infrared if you remove the KTP crystal). You said your going to be building it right?
Pervs try to be good this time around.

As dave (daguin) said be careful in australian law... its a deep ocean that i doubt you want to be diving in publicly, but im sure you will have no problem with bobhaha by your side :)

so for your reports id stick with legal (lab) lasers.

Good to see another Aussie on here.
The laws regarding lasers here are strict. Since this is an assignment you will definitely want to stick with lab-styles.
But you should find everything you will need to know here!

...but what lasers are classified as 'lab lasers?'

Basically any laser that runs off mains power is a lab laser.

The laws in Australia only prohibit handheld lasers that run off batteries that are greater than 1mW.
So you could even buy a laser module, hook it up to a battery and it wouldn't be classified as "handheld".

Welcome to LPF!

17 year old with a pilots license? Wow...

Building lasers is very easy once you learn how. Just read up on eye safety first! :)

I know sooner or later photonaholic will post this... so since he hasn't, I think it would be most appropriate that I post it.

Welcome to LPF. Enjoy your time with us here.

I have referred astro, to LPF so she can read up, and find documentation of most generic lasers, but in the case that a question arises, that I can not answer, this is her next source of info. So please be nice (no pervs please...).

Enjoy your stay!
