Signature "Guidelines"

There have been several questions and a few hurt feelings lately about signatures. We altered the signature guidelines in response to the flood of NooB's that came on along with the "Arctic" Here are the new guidelines:

You may have ONE link to your retail website in your signature.

Only the owner (or representative) of the website may do this. You may not have multiple "employees" including the same link in their signatures

You may NOT have multiple links to different products in your website.

You may NOT post links to third-party, referral or bonus type links in your signature

Also, endeavor to make your posts relevant to the content of the thread it is posted in. Leaving unrelated posts in a thread just to get your signature posted is considered SPAM.

*********************************************

(example of a bad post = Greetings from Israel. )

(cut-n-paste of example)

"Wondering if DX still sells 200mw laser?"

note - this comment was in a thread where a new member was just saying, "Hi!"
Everything below the line is signature !!
(links defeated in example below)

__________________
$36.00 True 100mW Green Laser Pointer

$ 41.18 ASKY 200mW 532nm Green Laser Pointer

$44.86 True 200mW Green Laser Pointer

$12.82 Green Laser Pointer Pen 50mW

IF you want to know about PA, click here!

the owner of <website>, come here not for spam, but for introduction and customer service, I will never give you a rubbish post or thread, all are sincere, impartial, and reliable just as my website

(end of cut-n-paste)

This example has one, short, unrelated sentence in it in the "post." It is followed by over 10 (6 of links along with double and triple spacing) lines of over-sized text that were almost all links to different products in his website

*************************************************

There are no limits to color or size. However, if it is obnoxious enough for multiple members to complain about, you will be asked to change it

Large graphics files (including GIF's or animations with MANY frames) are also a problem.

Here is an easy "rule of thumb." If your signature alone requires people to have to "scroll down" just to read the thread or have to "wait" excessively for the page to load, you will be asked to change it

Peace,
dave

Does this apply to personal websites as well as professional site?

My signature for instance? It has more than one link to my site, but it's not a commercial site?

Thanks

The guidelines for links are to limit the amount of exposure a company gets without paying for advertising. Links to reviews, tutorials, etc. (not related to a retail site) are not limited.

The guidelines for graphics and "size" are for everyone

dave

What ? ..... This means i cannot use my new 1440x960 45-minutes-loop 24FPS gif signature ?

Baaawww :cryy: ..... sniff .....

(j/k :p :D)

On a serious side, can be always set up a size or "weight" limit, if opening the forum become too heavy ..... anyway, as far as i've seen, at least til now, except some rare cases this forum don't have lots of users with very heavy signatures (and in some crazy anime and games sites, i really have seen users with a pair of 640x480 150 frames gifs used as signature )

Why need all this when signatures could be just turned off in profile options?

If you look through the forum, you will see that MANY members use the signature function quite reasonably.

It would seem a bit of overkill to restrict 18K members just because a very few members misuse the function.

Peace,
dave

Ermm, because if we have to turn off signatures globally just to avoid the spammy ones, then we miss the legit ones in the process. ?

How about links to LPF sales threads?
something like:

get my lenses here... lpf thread link
get my hosts here... lpf thread link #2

That off limits? Cause those are rather helpful at times... Its just external sites that your limiting?

These restrictions are mostly for "commercial" businesses. "Internal" and "hobbyist" type links are handled differently

I just made a gif and wanted to make it my avatar but I wasn't sure if it was excessively large. Could somebody point me in the right direction? I made it smaller sized (100x100) to avoid it being TOO large.

IIRC the avatar size is 400 X 400px max. If your file is too big, as in kbs, bring down the resolution of the gif.

After posting about them in 5 threads in three days, I included a link to these goggles in my sig (See sig). I see people ask about goggles so often it got annoying constantly finding the website and copying the url to post.

I just wanted to ask if it's an acceptable link rather than wait to be yelled at about it. I'll remove it if you (being whoever looks after this thread and it's affairs) asks me to.
